🌍 At #WUF13, #ESCWA co-organized with @UNHABITAT and the Al Madinah Region Development Authority a dynamic discussion on "From SDG Localization to Housing and Resilience – Impact through Voluntary Local Reviews (VLRs)."

The event explored how cities can strengthen housing systems, localize the #SDGs, and build more resilient communities through effective policies, partnerships, and data-driven decision-making.

كيف ننتقل من العمل المحلي إلى الأثر الوطني؟ 🏙️💧

خلال المنتدى الحضري العالمي الثالث عشر في باكو، استعرضت جلسة "من تنفيذ المشاريع إلى تغيير السياسات – بناء مدن مرنة مائيًا" كيف تُسهم التدخلات الميدانية والعملية في صياغة السياسات الحضرية وتعزيز أطر التخطيط عبر المنطقة العربية.

تُقدم مدن مثل إربد وزحلة وعمان نموذجًا لكيفية ترجمة المشاريع التجريبية إلى تغييرات مؤسسية مستدامة، مما يعزز سلامة المساكن من الفيضانات، وأكثر صمودًا في أوقات ندرة المياه، ويرفع جاهزيتها لمواجهة تغيّر المناخ.

How do we move from local action to national impact? 🏙️💧

At the World Urban Forum 13 in Baku, the session “From Project Implementation to Policy Change – Building Water Resilient Cities” showcases how practical on-the-ground interventions are shaping urban policy and strengthening planning across the Arab region.

Cities such as Amman, Irbid, and Zahle are demonstrating how pilot projects can translate into sustainable institutional change, enhancing housing safety against floods, increasing resilience during water scarcity, and improving readiness to tackle climate.

في إطار دعم التنمية المحلية وتعزيز التنافسية على مستوى المحافظات، نظّمت #الإسكوا، بالتعاون مع وزارة الاقتصاد في عُمان (@MOE_Oman)، ورشة عمل حول مؤشر تنافسية المحافظات، وذلك استكمالا للمرحلة الثانية من تطوير المؤشر وتفعيله بما يدعم وضع سياسات قائمة على البيانات ومتابعة الأداء التنموي على المستوى المحلي.

وركّزت الورشة على استعراض التقدم المحرز في تطوير النظام، وتعزيز نقل المعرفة وبناء قدرات الفريقين الفني والتقني في وزارة الاقتصاد، إلى جانب استكمال التجهيزات اللازمة لضمان جاهزيته التشغيلية. كما تناولت الإطار السياساتي الذي يربط بين التدخلات التنموية ومؤشرات التنافسية، وآليات تحليل النتائج والاستفادة منها في تحديد الأولويات التنموية ومعالجة الفجوات بين المحافظات، بما ينسجم مع مستهدفات الخطة الخمسية ورؤية عُمان 2040.

As part of efforts to support local development and enhance competitiveness at the governorate level, #ESCWA, in collaboration with the Ministry of Economy in Oman (@MOE_Oman), organized a workshop on the Governorates Competitiveness Index. The workshop advanced the second phase of developing and operationalizing the Index to support evidence-based policymaking and monitor local development performance.

The workshop reviewed progress in system development, strengthened knowledge transfer, and built the capacities of the ministry’s technical team, while also ensuring operational readiness. Discussions covered the policy framework linking development interventions with competitiveness indicators and mechanisms for analyzing results to identify priorities and address disparities among governorates, in line with the Five-Year Development Plan and Oman Vision 2040.

💡 Through interactive discussions and practical learning, participants explored policy tools, strategies, and guidelines that can help SMEs adopt circular business practices, enhance resource efficiency, and unlock new opportunities for sustainable growth.

🤝 The workshops also strengthened collaboration between public and private stakeholders, fostering the partnerships needed to create a more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable economy.

🌡️🌍 Climate change is accelerating at an alarming pace, prompting countries to commit more seriously to the transition towards low-carbon economies.

To examine how Arab countries can strengthen local bond markets and attract greater domestic and foreign investment in green, social, sustainable and sustainability-linked (GSSS) bonds, #ESCWA and the @Arab_API have issued the report:📘 “Green, Social, Sustainability and Sustainability-Linked Bonds in the Arab Region.”

The report presents key recommendations to support sustainable finance, deepen local capital markets, and help bridge the financing gap needed to build resilient and sustainable economies.
