From Nepal to Maryland, compassion crossed borders.

UNITED SIKHS joined the Nepalese community at the Nepal Education and Cultural Center in Maryland for a peace walk, prayers, and a gathering led by Venerable Bhikku Pannakara in solidarity with those affected by the devastating floods.

As communities came together in prayer, Venerable Bhikku Pannakara reminded us that supporting those in crisis is only part of the journey. The deeper question is whether we can build a world where people can live without fear, suffering, and conflict.

In moments of grief, compassion calls us to show up, give what we can, and keep working toward peace.

UNITED SIKHS joined Congressman Tom Suozzi and Congressman Brad Knott, and national faith leaders in Washington, D.C. to urge Congress to advance the Right to Worship Act, aimed at protecting Americans from threats, intimidation, and obstruction while accessing houses of worship.

The freedom to worship and the freedom to speak are both fundamental First Amendment rights. Protecting one should not come at the expense of the other.

For Sikh Americans and communities across the country, the ability to enter a gurdwara, church, synagogue, mosque, or other house of worship without fear or intimidation is fundamental to religious freedom.

The right to worship must be protected for all.

UNITED SIKHS met with the office of Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon, U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division in Washington, D.C., to continue dialogue on religious liberty and civil rights protections.

The meeting addressed religious accommodation, discrimination, hate-based violence, and protections for religious institutions.

WE SHOWED UP IN WASHINGTON, D.C.

Today, UNITED SIKHS stood alongside immigrant truckers and our community at the E. Barrett Prettyman Courthouse as the D.C. Circuit heard oral arguments in Rivera Luján v. FMCSA.

We were there to advocate for fair treatment, due process, and the right to earn a livelihood without discrimination.

This case is about ensuring commercial drivers are evaluated based on their qualifications, licensing, compliance, and demonstrated ability to operate safely, not broad assumptions tied to their immigration status.

The hearing is over. The work continues.

25 years ago today, Balbir Singh Sodhi was murdered in Mesa, Arizona, just four days after 9/11.

His killing is widely recognized as one of the earliest and most significant acts of anti-Sikh violence in the aftermath of the attacks. His death became a painful reminder of the hatred and violence Sikh Americans could face simply for who they were or how they were perceived.

As we remember the lives lost on September 11, we also remember the lives forever impacted by the hate and discrimination that followed. Sikh, Muslim, South Asian, Middle Eastern, and other minority communities faced violence, harassment, racism, and fear simply because of who they were or how they were perceived.

Today, we remember Mr. Sodhi not only for the circumstances of his death, but for the life he lived, the courage of his family and community, and the resilience of all those who endured hate in the years that followed.

Twenty-five years later, we remember. We speak up. And we continue to stand against hate in all its forms.

Keeping Mr. Sodhi’s legacy alive means continuing the work of building understanding, protecting communities, and standing for dignity and justice for all.

UNITED SIKHS has formally filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for a civil rights review and corrective action following the DHS “Mr. Singh” graphic.

Removing the post does not erase the harm or the questions it raised.

Our complaint calls for accountability, an acknowledgment of the impact on Sikh Americans and other communities, and safeguards to help prevent similar incidents from happening again.
