[António Guterres @antonioguterres]

Warm congratulations to Navi Pillay on being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

From her work in South Africa defending Nelson Mandela & others, to her role as an international judge on cases relating to international crimes, including the genocide in Rwanda, to her tenure as High Commissioner for Human Rights, to chairing the @UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, she has shown that the force of law must prevail over the law of force and that defending human rights is the surest safeguard against injustice.

Today’s prize is a tribute to all those working to uphold & defend international law, the rule of law & human rights, and secure peace, justice & human dignity.

Men go to war.

Women are left to hold together what war broke and accept agreements they had no hand in shaping.

There can be no lasting peace in the Great Lakes region without women at the table and at the heart of prevention and decision-making.

I was deeply honored to recieve Mr. Chaloka Beyani, @UN Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide and Hate Speech at our @UN_Women offices today.

We shared on how hate speech is structural violence against women and can be online and offline. We briefed on the range of collaborative work, and how the mandate intersects with our UN commitment to human rights, peace and security and the responsibility to protect.

I am honoured to sit as a member of the UN high level steering committee that supports this work, bringing a gender equality and women’s human rights perspective to this mandate.

[Ministry of Foreign Affairs of BiH 🇧🇦 @mfa_bih]

A particularly important and personal meeting amid recent developments with UN Under-Secretary-General and Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide Dr. Chaloka Beyani.

🇧🇦 FM @dinokonakovic revisited the concerns raised with UN Member States regarding the state and military honors accorded in Serbia to Ratko Mladić, convicted of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. For Bosnia and Herzegovina, Srebrenica is not simply a chapter of history. Behind every judgment are victims, survivors and families who have carried the consequences for more than three decades. Glorifying those responsible is an affront to their dignity and a warning of what happens when denial and revisionism are normalized.

Minister Konaković called for a clear international response and stressed the responsibility to defend established facts, protect the dignity of victims and recognize warning signs before they become something far more dangerous. The lesson of Srebrenica is not only to remember what happened, but to act when we recognize the warning signs again.
