Read all of this. Then share it with your eco-minded friends who don’t take covid precautions. Give them a respirator, too, so they will have no excuses left.
So, Covid hospitalizations in UK jumped 500% in one month?
Huh 🤔
In September?
Just as kids go back to school?
Just as adults go back to work?
Just in time for respiratory season?
Huh 🤔
Small choices can make a big difference when it comes to reducing the spread of respiratory illness.
Mask with a high quality respirator, test when you may have been exposed, improve ventilation and stay home when you’re sick. These everyday actions help protect you and the people around you.
Prevention works best when we all do our part.

Masking is a two-way street.
A well-fitting, high-quality respirator can help protect you from breathing in airborne infections, while also reducing the amount of infectious particles you release into the air if you’re sick.
That means masking works in both directions: protecting the person wearing it and helping protect the people around them.
When more of us mask, especially in crowded or poorly ventilated spaces, everyone benefits.

🚨BREAKING 🦠
On Friday, the US CDC arbitrarily shifted higher COVlD levels into lower categories depicted with cooler colors.
Much of what was Very High is now "High." What was High is now "Moderate" or "Low." Low is "Very Low."
🔹2 states/territories artificially shifted from High to Moderate (MS, GU)
🔹5 shifted from Moderate to Low (CA, TX, AK, WA, NV)
🔹4 shifted from Low to Very Low (AZ, AR, LA, NC)
During intense surges, states will rarely get classified as Very High anymore. Presently, transmission is rising across the US, with a 75% chance of a wave, but states will be depicted in blue (Very Low) much longer, making communities less prepared. #Bluewashing
Normally, when the CDC makes a methodology change, they flag it prominently on each of their COVlD monitoring pages. This time, there was no alert and no explanation. Major changes were confined to COVlD, not Influenza A, and not RSV. The questionable change was made in the middle of rising transmission across most of the country; 15 states already have COVlD outbreaks, and others may soon join the ranks. These are serious ethics concerns that warrant investigative journalism.
These issues are aggravated by delayed reporting at High/Very High monitoring sites. Sites with 1-week reporting delays get excluded when the CDC calculates current levels. For example, only 16% of the sites online in Texas (3 of 19) report High/Very High levels, but 90% of those with a 1-week reporting delay (18 of 20) have High/Very High levels, leading the state to get classified as "Low" when really High. These issues snowball and can easily push a state down 1-2 categories when experiencing significant COVlD outbreaks.
The good news is that the individual wastewater monitoring site data are still valid. The bad news is that the CDC maps and level descriptions will now mislead the casual user. Think: "Good data, bad use of data." At PMC, we told you that if there was any funny business at the CDC, we would warn you right away. We diagnosed the issue immediately and will still report accurate COVlD information.
Expect further national news coverage this week. Journalists are welcome to reach out.
Reducing your risk of serious illness is not only about diet, exercise and routine screenings. Preventing COVID infections can also be an important part of protecting your long-term health.
COVID can affect multiple systems throughout the body and has been associated with increased risks of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cognitive problems, immune dysfunction and Long COVID. These effects can occur after infections that initially seemed mild, and the risk may increase with repeated infections.

As the Andes hantavirus outbreak linked to the MV Hondius cruise ship expands across multiple countries, researchers are warning that airborne transmission must be taken seriously.
Current guidance in some settings still recommends medical masks, despite respirators such as N95, FFP2, and FFP3 masks being specifically designed to protect against airborne infectious particles. Medical masks are not designed to provide the same level of airborne protection.
With documented person-to-person transmission, uncertain infectious timing, and long incubation periods, the World Health Network is calling for stronger airborne precautions, including universal respirator use and clearer public communication around airborne risk.

4/ To avoid broader disruption later, the least disruptive path is rapid targeted containment now: full precautions for exposed individuals, careful transport, contact tracing, monitoring, and prevention of onward transmission.
The time to stop a fire is when it is still small.

“Masks don’t work.”
We still hear this a lot, and it usually comes down to misunderstanding how masks actually work.
Masks aren’t just tiny strainers. High-quality masks (like N95s) use electrostatic charge to attract and trap airborne particles, including those that carry viruses.
Fit matters, too. A loose mask leaves gaps. A well-fitted respirator is designed to seal and protect both what you breathe in and what you breathe out.
And here’s the part people miss: dose matters. The more virus you inhale, the higher your risk. Masks reduce that exposure, and when both people mask, protection compounds.
So no, it’s not that “masks don’t work.” It’s that not all masks, or how they’re used, work the same.
