Not only this, but it promoted unity in the global Body of Christ. The best VBS in my town, by far, was run by the Chinese Christian Church. We watched their curb for the sign every spring so we wouldn't miss sign up. It was so fun, and I learned Jesus is Lord in other languages
I remember when my kids were little, there was a whole VBS circuit, that all the moms knew about. You could have your kid in a VBS each week of summer and have your summer childcare covered. There were charts, with churches and times, and everything.
Some of the older people got mad about this. Said this was about Jesus, not people getting free childcare.
And that's the wrong take. These kids learned to feel safe in church. They heard about Jesus. They met every pastor in town. The financial burden on neighborhood families were lifted. And you didn't see the fruit right away. But when there was a death in the family, or a tragedy, old VBS attenders knew who to reach out to. And they met with Jesus when it mattered, and the Holy Spirit controls the timing, not us.
Grace is lavish. The gospel is lavish. Just look at the parable of the sower. He's just throwing seed every which way, on rocks, on thorns, on good soil. Sow lavishly, because the seed we are sowing is lavish. Grace sown stingy isn't grace.
My goodness, everyone needs to go and read/watch "Babette's Feast." Learn something about the transforming power of grace when it's given generously.
My husband tries really hard, but he makes cooking mistakes that probably no one has ever made before
Heโs cooking a soup Iโve made for us a thousand times, and he just added A CUP AND A HALF of apple cider vinegar instead of apple cider (which he bought! for this recipe!)
@JackPosobiec Old Salem (Winston-Salem, NC) is the same way. I went with my child's school trip and was appalled by the level of scorn displayed by the docents and reenactors there for the founders of the town they are helping to recreate. It's truly sad.
USA. A potluck. Everyone brings one dish. I have never been so out of my depth in my life.
I was invited to a gathering. "Just bring a dish to share," they said. Simple words. I did not sleep for three days.
Because I understood instantly what this was. A summit. Every guest, a lord of their own house, arriving bearing tribute. And tribute is judged. Tribute is ranked. To bring the wrong dish to the wrong table is to fall in standing before your peers, possibly forever.
So I prepared. I made my finest dish. I carried it to the door with two hands and a straight back, braced for the weighing of my worth.
The first lord arrived with a bowl of orange powder noodles. Macaroni and cheese. The crowd roared. He set it down at the center of the table. The CENTER. I noted this. The center is the seat of power.
The second lord brought a tower of small brown meat orbs in red sauce. "Meatballs," he announced, like a man laying down a sword. They were placed beside the macaroni. A strong showing. An alliance, perhaps.
I studied the table like a battlefield map. Potato salad: defensive, reliable, old money. A vegetable tray, untouched, clearly a hostage offering no one expected to win. And then a woman walked in, raised a flat box overhead, and the entire room turned and CHEERED.
Pizza. She had brought pizza. Store-bought. Still in the box.
I was stunned. She had not even cooked it. And yet the people rejoiced as if a king had entered. I revised my entire understanding of the hierarchy on the spot. Effort means nothing here. Only the roar of the crowd decides rank.
I placed my dish down, humbly, near the napkins. A peasant's position. I accepted it.
And then a man tapped my shoulder, pointed at my dish, and said the words that changed everything.
"Whoa, did you make this? This is amazing. Everybody, you GOTTA try this guy's thing."
The room turned. The room came. The room ATE. My dish vanished in ninety seconds. The pizza woman herself took a second helping and looked at me with respect.
I had won the summit. By accident. With a dish I placed by the napkins.
I understand nothing about this country. I have never been happier. I am hosting the next one.
So tell me, America.
Is there a system to the potluck? A secret rank? A hidden law?
I have decided there is not.
You just bring the thing you love, and everyone eats it, and somehow everybody wins.
It is the most insane way to hold a war.
I will fight in every single one.
@paolomossetti She was not the valedictorian. She was graduating as a junior, with the highest GPA, but not the highest *senior* GPA... because she was not a senior.
The school let her give the welcome speech, and she gave her approved speech before launching into politics and being stopped.
This is such a perfect distillation of lazy poverty mindset, it is literally an American folk song. (In the song, the paragon of this attitude is a backwoods Arkansas guy, not a Scot, but I think that reinforces the idea that you will find this mindset in all cultures.)
I was a dirt poor teacher at the time, but alllllllll my friends were buying/selling LuLaRoe. I actually found one really cute skirt at a friend's party and bought it. I still get compliments on it! But almost almost every other item for sale was an eyesore!
Remember when all the stay-home-moms became โgirl bossesโ and harassed us with their hideous LulaRoe clothing?
I wonder where all those ugly dresses and leggings went?

@WilliamWolfe Same. My husband has worked his tail off at his new job (started 8 years ago), climbing and getting raises... and we're in the same financial situation even though he makes more. I'm watching him despair because no matter how hard he works to earn more, basic expenses eat it up.
@iWomansplainer Congratulations! My husband has been in this grind for 6 years (actuarial exams). He just passed his 8th of 10 exams, the toughest so far.
@thechosenberg "I want to stay on good terms since (I) live at home" is the key.
He lives with his mommy. She did the leg work for the lawsuit. She should get a cut of the cash.
For the past 8 years, my husband has been working full time and studying for basically a PhD. I have STILL never mowed our grass, fixed the sink/car/computer, or cleaned the gutters. And when he finishes, he will take back over with the budget, mechanic appts, and soccer practice
This! I'm a former teacher, using rigorous curriculum and standardized testing. My kids are years ahead of their peers in most subjects. But it takes one corrupt or prejudiced case worker, one mis-filed form, one box checked in a database to create a nightmare situation.
Full disclosure: I'm a homeschool mom whose kids take standardized tests, hang out around mandated reporters all the time, get all the vanilla well child checkups, I'm a teacher myself, I follow every "responsible homeschooling" metric I've ever seen proposed. I'm about as boring and "by the book" of a homeschool mom as you can get. I'm the dream homeschool mom according to the system. I've had other homeschoolers roll their eyes at me because of how I roll.
I still oppose this as a top-down proposal, though.
Why? Governments aren't stable globally. I've taught girls living in Afghanistan. I've taught students living in refugee camps that were banned from local schools and have had collective education within their camps squashed by local governments. I would like for them to have the least amount of government intervention possible. Homeschooling is freedom. Homeschooling is resilience. It's not suspicious or a sin to not trust governments.
You can fall under the control of a corrupt and terrifying government that doesn't want your children to be educated faster than you even know what is happening. I've seen governments step in and STOP children from being educated just as much as I've seen them step in and make sure they ARE getting an education in 2026. We live in scary times.
Why am I doing dress surgery to remove fully sewn in SHOULDER PADS in the Year of our Lord 2026, but they can't be bothered to attach the pads in a sports bra so I have to fish the out of the dryer after every wash?
Look, parents with advanced STEM degrees just arenโt smart enough to homeschool their kids.
You have to let fat retarded communist women with a BA in interpersonal communication and a Masters in uptalking handle education.
@handmadeshoesia I overslept last week, but as I scrambled to get ready for the day, I smelled waffles! My 4 kids were finishing breakfast, because my 10 year old made waffles for everyone ๐
