On August 11, 1984, Ronald Reagan was about to record his weekly radio address when he leaned into the microphone and joked:

“My fellow Americans, I’m pleased to tell you today that I have signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes.”

It was only a mic check. The line was never meant to air.

But the recording leaked, and in the middle of the Cold War, a joke about bombing the Soviet Union was hardly harmless. Moscow reacted angrily, while critics in the U.S. accused Reagan of being dangerously reckless.

Reagan later acknowledged it was a joke. But the moment became legendary.

It was classic Reagan: a former Hollywood actor using timing, humor and a single offhand line to create one of the most memorable moments of the Cold War.
