It’s called energy waste reduction. Every electric and gas utility in Michigan is required to run programs that cut energy waste. For homes, that can mean more efficient lighting, heating and cooling upgrades, weatherization, or recycling an old appliance.

For every $1 utilities spent on these programs last year, customers are expected to save $2.42. They can help hold down costs even if you’ve never signed up. Wasting less energy can help delay or avoid building costly new power plants and soften the hit from rising fuel costs.

A bigger share of this help is reaching lower-income families. More than $162 million went to programs for Michiganders who qualify based on income last year. That’s over a quarter of all spending, up from less than 10% in 2016.
