Six Flags America in Bowie, Maryland, will close permanently at the end of the 2025 season, with its final day set for November 2. Six Flags Entertainment Corporation CEO Richard Zimmerman announced that the decision was based on financial considerations and that the park’s 500-acre property would be put up for sale.

“As part of a comprehensive review, we determined Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor no longer align with our long-term plans,” Zimmerman said. He added that selling the land for redevelopment is expected to yield the highest return on investment.

The park originally opened in 1974 as a wildlife preserve and theme park and later became Six Flags America in 1999. While the future for park employees remains uncertain, Six Flags’ 70 corporate associates will be offered severance packages and benefits.

“This was a difficult decision,” Zimmerman noted, “and we are grateful to our associates who have created lifelong memories for our guests.”
