Prof. Leon Mutesa, ACT-CHIK Project Lead, highlighted that Chikungunya is often misdiagnosed as malaria in #Africa and as Zika in other parts of the world, leading to challenges in disease management and surveillance.
He noted that the ACT-CHIK Project will strengthen capacity for clinical trials, build on the progress already made by Institut Pasteur, a key consortium partner, and contribute to eradicating cases of misdiagnosis.
Sotiris Missailidis, ACT-CHIK Project Coordinator from Institut Pasteur, expressed confidence that ACT-CHIK consortium will help deliver the first #Chikungunya#vaccine developed for children and produced in Africa.
He noted that existing chikungunya vaccines were primarily developed for travelers, not manufactured in Africa, and have limited accessibility for the populations most affected by the disease.
Also present at the launch was Anh Wartel, Deputy Director General and Regional Director of the Europe Regional Office at #IVI. She highlighted that the ACT-CHIK consortium comes at a crucial time to support #Rwanda and other African countries in strengthening clinical trial capacity and advancing #vaccine manufacturing capabilities across the continent.
