He was a remarkable teacher, mentor, and clinician. His grab-you-by-the-shoulder conversations were always a treat that left you with a smile. He will be missed. 🙏🏼 RIP GMcC
We are deeply saddened to share that Dr. George McCracken, one of the founding architects of the field of pediatric ID, passed away July 3 at the age of 89. Dr. McCracken was a founding PIDS member and served on the BOD twice. He was an icon, a mentor and friend.
One 💉injection, every 6️⃣months. Potential to halt transmission in high risk groups w/ traditional low uptake of oral PrEP - like adolescents/young adults & sexually trafficked youth. Time will tell if this important tool will be viable option or out of reach💰 for these groups
The FDA on Wednesday approved a twice-yearly injection that provided a near-perfect shield against HIV infection in clinical trials. https://t.co/7wlPCmdhVy

Today's decision is about undermining independent medical expertise and will only further endanger the health of the American public, especially children. https://t.co/SFgjr1ISn6
This Mother’s Day, we honor every mother who brings life into the world with courage—and we recognize the extraordinary work of the healthcare teams who make a healthy start possible for every child.
Behind this success is tirelessly work by MFM/OBs to pedi ID specialists, SW/case managers, community grant programs to lab scientists, their coordinated efforts ensure that families receive the care, support, and treatment they need—both here in the U.S. and around the world.
This Mother’s Day, we celebrate not only the strength and love of mothers everywhere—but also a remarkable medical achievement that has transformed the lives of thousands: the near elimination of maternal-to-child transmission of HIV in the United States.
The rate of HIV transmission from mother to infant in the U.S. has dropped to less than 1% since the groundbreaking 076 PATCG study and other clinical trials. This means that today, thousands of infants are born each year to mothers living with HIV—and are free of the virus.
We’re excited to announce a historic nine-figure grant from The Moody Foundation supporting our joint Dallas pediatric campus with @childrens. In honor of this grant, the hospital will be named Moody Children’s Hospital upon completion. https://t.co/Tq1whVD9IK @utswpediatrics
UT Southwestern Q&A: What you need to know about the measles: Newsroom, by our #pedsID division chief and virologist, Dr Jeffrey Kahn - UT Southwestern, Dallas, Texas https://t.co/4h9MKoww7E
“Last week, Collin Co warned of possible measles exposure in Plano. Individual who spent time in the county on April 10 and 11 and visited 3 retailers in Plano had tested (+) measles. Last week, measles case confirmed in Rockwall Co, possibly connected to West Texas outbreak.”
Last week our ID fellows learned our procedures for managing patients with High Consequence Infectious Diseases, including donning and doffing PPE. We train our fellows to be the next leaders in all aspects of infectious diseases, including infection prevention.
