Today would have marked the 93rd Birthday of Olene Walker, Utah’s first female governor! Walker served as Utah’s 15th governor from 2003-2005 and was committed to affordable housing, education funding and literacy programs.

Honoring the courage and sacrifice of all veterans! The Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos Veterans Memorial is on the west side of the Capitol. Clyde “Ross” Morgan sculpted the bronze soldier; the circular wall was created by Mark Davenport.

Throwback to artists carefully restoring the Rotunda’s dome mural, “Seagulls”, during the 2004-2008 Capitol restoration. Some seagulls have a six-foot wingspan to be viewed from the Rotunda floor, 165 feet below!

The Capitol’s first floor contains many displays teaching visitors about the building and Utah's history. The pictured display features some of the materials used in the building, such as Birdseye marble, Utah onyx and Sanpete oolite.

During the Capitol’s 2004-2008 restoration, the glass floor panels of the Rotunda were restored to allow natural light to filter down into the first floor. This beautiful space is a favorite of many Capitol visitors!

The Capitol is 107 years old today! On this date in 1916, the Utah State Capitol was dedicated before a crowd of nearly 40,000. In Governor Spry’s address, he said, “We expect this building to be one of which will be a joy as long as it might stand.”
