UGenie educates school and college pupils about the power of molecular biology and biotechnology to benefit society through hands-on CRISPR gene editing experiments.
UGenie is a wrap for 2025! Many thanks to all our fantastic students who were a delight to have on the course @UlsterUniBiomed@UlsterUni. Wishing them every success with their AS results next week.
After their career's morning, our UGenie students spent the afternoon analyzing multiplex PCR products from their CRISPR knockout strains using @theBentoLab. As always, using their phones to take pics of the gels through the portable imaging hood was a big hit!
We also had presentations from our course directors @Ali_Yeates1 and @RachelleIrwin15 on Biology and Biomedical Science UG degree courses @UlsterUniBiomed, and an excellent talk from employability consultant Siobhan Johnston.
Penultimate day of UGenie 2025, and we had a fantastic career's morning with inspiring talks from recent graduates and PhD students @UlsterUniBiomed on their educational journeys to date.
Ah, so exciting!!! Secondary students preparing CRISPR knockouts for multiplex PCR!!
I would have absolutely died to be a part of the UGenie summer school when I was a teenager.
UGenie 2025 is now in full flow. Our students have already generated CRISPR gene knockouts in E . coli and are now preparing their edited samples for multiplex PCR analysis on Bento Labs. @UUGene_Editing@UlsterUniBiomed@theBentoLab.
We are really excited to finally share this resource. We hope it becomes a useful starting point for biology students. Please let us know if you have any feedback!
Baby KJ, the world's first patient to receive personalized CRISPR gene editing therapy for a rare metabolic disease, is now home and thriving! This groundbreaking treatment offers hope for other untreatable genetic conditions. #CRISPR#GeneEditing https://t.co/MjXM2X8lEW
UGenie 2025 is due to commence in August. This article by @bethanwolfenden @theBentoLab gives great insight into the Academy’s activities @UlsterUniBiomed. https://t.co/uQzSNHNXAZ
Amazing news! 🌟 Baby KJ received a custom CRISPR therapy for a life-threatening genetic disorder, developed in a record 6 months! He's now thriving, and this breakthrough could revolutionize personalized medicine. A true game-changer! 🧬 #CRISPR

Training Biology teachers from across NI key molecular biology skills with @theBentoLab that they can transfer back to the classroom. Many thanks to @atky33@RachelleIrwin15 for invaluable help @UlsterUniBiomed.
Deadline is fast approaching for UGenie 2025 applications. See link below if you know year 13 pupils who may be interested. Unfortunately, we won’t be bringing back Woolly Mammoths but you’ll still develop lots of skills in CRISPR for genome editing! https://t.co/ZNmwi1thhx
Fun day teaching year 14s how to analyse PCR products on @theBentoLab as part of our Ulster Life Science and Biotech (ULife) Education hub for schools and colleges @UlsterUniBiomed. Looking forward to more tomorrow @RachelleIrwin15@atky33.
SOUND ON. You’re hearing the first howl of a dire wolf in over 10,000 years. Meet Romulus and Remus—the world’s first de-extinct animals, born on October 1, 2024.
The dire wolf has been extinct for over 10,000 years. These two wolves were brought back from extinction using genetic edits derived from a complete dire wolf genome, meticulously reconstructed by Colossal from ancient DNA found in fossils dating back 11,500 and 72,000 years. This moment marks not only a milestone for us as a company but also a leap forward for science, conservation, and humanity. From the beginning, our goal has been clear: “To revolutionize history and be the first company to use CRISPR technology successfully in the de-extinction of previously lost species.” By achieving this, we continue to push forward our broader mission on—accepting humanity’s duty to restore Earth to a healthier state.
But this isn’t just our moment—it’s one for science, our planet, and humankind. All of which we love and are passionate about. Now, close your eyes and listen to that howl once more. Think about what this means for all of us.
