There are those in Russia old enough to remember the waning years of the Soviet Union, when a mighty empire entered its autumn and the signs of decay crept unseen through its halls. With empty shelves, long queues, and the uneasy knowledge that what could be bought today might not be found tomorrow.

Now, as the refinery campaign takes its toll, those memories stir again. For the heirs of the Soviet age are quick to recall old hungers, and old fears sleep lightly. What begins as a shortage of fuel may become something greater: doubt in the strength of the figurehead at the top itself.

For this is the way of decline. Thus the shadow lengthens, and a power that once believed itself unassailable finds that, in seeking to subdue a lesser realm, it has instead awakened a foe more resolute than any it had foreseen.

Daily Ukraine map thread for Monday 22nd June 2026

A very small focus on Bryansk today after strikes on the rail infrastructure in Bryansk itself, on top of strikes on logistics over the past three weeks.

Ukrainian long range missiles struck the Voronezh Semiconductor Devices Plant during daylight hours, causing severe damage. Potentially Storm Shadow, but has not yet been confirmed.
