After decades of peace and diplomacy, Somaliland nears historic recognition. With 20 countries including the U.S., UK, Israel, and UAE reportedly ready to formalize ties, and entry into the Abraham Accords, a new era begins. #Somaliland#Recognition#Diplomacy#HornOfAfrica
Sources: U.S., UK, Israel, UAE Among 20 Nations Preparing to Recognize Somaliland
African media sources told ME24 that the United States, the United Kingdom, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and 17 other countries are in the final stages of an agreement to grant official recognition to Somaliland in the coming months.
According to the same sources, Somaliland is also expected to join the Abraham Accords soon, marking a major diplomatic development in the Horn of Africa and the wider Middle East region.
Kudos to @SenTedCruz, Chair of the @SenateForeign#Africa Subcommittee, for calling on @POTUS admin to advance #USA🇺🇲 strategic interests by recognizing the reality of #Somaliland’s independence & sovereignty, instead of indulging delusions of the rump #Somalia🇸🇴 failed state.
The Extension Decision & Its Impact
The House of Elders (Guurti) decision to extend the terms of the House of Representatives and Local Councils (27 months) and themselves (39 months) is a setback for Somaliland’s democratic process. The new timeline raises serious doubts about whether elections will happen at all.
Key Impacts:
➡️ Electoral Delay: Erodes public and stakeholder trust in timely elections.
➡️Chain Extensions: Signals a shift toward power consolidation instead of democratic competition.
➡️ Weakened Accountability: Undermines the system of checks and balances within national institutions.
Protecting the democratic process is vital for a stable future. Elections are the foundation of governance and public trust.

Success and Sovereignty! Somaliland 🟩⬜️🟥
Somaliland MP has called on X to allow users to select “Somaliland” as a distinct location instead of “Somalia.”
The MP argues this is about accurate representation, dignity, and recognising Somaliland’s separate identity. @X
This marks a constructive and forward-looking shift. For African countries, it highlights the importance of preparedness and a gradual, strategic transition-from reliance on aid toward strengthening local production, private enterprise, and value creation.
The moment calls for fostering resilient, inclusive economies driven by innovation, investment, and self-reliance. It is an opportunity to move from dependency to capability, and from expectation to partnership-advancing sustainable growth through productivity and shared prosperity.
The long-awaited book “Somaliland State-Building: Understanding the Nexus of Democracy, Clan, and Islam” by Dr. @MohamedBarawani is finally on its way, to Somaliland and to a global audience. A timely and important contribution to understanding one of the most complex and underexplored state-building experiences in the Horn of Africa.
Greece, a global maritime power, and Somaliland, at the gateway of the Red Sea, have natural strategic alignment. Cooperation in ports, shipping, security, and education can deepen ties even without formal recognition.
Practical partnership. Shared prosperity. Strategic vision.

Women in Diplomacy: Shaping the Future of Somaliland’s Global Standing
I was deeply honored to serve as a panelist last night in a high-level dialogue hosted by @siradinitiative on Women in Diplomacy and the strategic path toward Somaliland’s re-recognition.
The discussion highlighted a fundamental truth: the participation of women is not merely a matter of representation, but a cornerstone of effective national and international relations. As Somaliland expands its diplomatic footprint in 2026, the inclusion of female leadership ensures a more resilient, credible, and innovative presence on the local and global stage.
I am grateful to Siraad Initiatives for convening such a timely and essential platform. Together, we can reaffirm our commitment to a sovereign, democratic, and inclusive future for the Republic of Somaliland. 🟩⬜️🟥🤝🌍

This marks a bold step for Somaliland as it seeks stronger international partnerships. A potential trade agreement with Israel would not only highlight Somaliland’s growing recognition but also open doors for economic growth through its valuable mineral resources. Progress like this shows Somaliland’s determination to stand tall on the global stage. 🌍✨ Thanks H.E President @Abdirahmanirro for your remarkable speech.
Somaliland expects to reach a trade agreement soon with Israel, the first country to recognize its independence, and is willing to offer rights to valuable mineral deposits as part of a deal, President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi told Reuters https://t.co/4oxgSfjcPp
