South African fintech Happy Pay has raised $5 million in seed funding, in a round led by global venture capital firm Partech, 𝗮𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗮 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗹𝘆.

The raised capital will be used to grow the team, enhance the product, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮, 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗳𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄.

The funding highlights a shift in the Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) space, where most providers rely on interest charges, late fees, or consumer-linked costs to generate revenue. However,

𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗣𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗸��𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵.

Instead of charging users, the platform generates revenue from merchants and brands, 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗽𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲.

✅Consumers can split payments at no cost
✅Merchants fund the financing in exchange for increased sales.

𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗣𝗮𝘆 𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗽𝗮𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺. Businesses are then charged based on completed transactions, not clicks or impressions, effectively turning marketing spend into a driver of financing.

In South Africa, where borrowing costs remain high and financial pressure is widespread, demand for flexible, low-cost payment options is growing.

Happy Pay's merchant-funded model represents a meaningful rethink of how consumer credit can be structured, by moving costs away from consumers and onto the commercial side of transactions.

NEW: The owner of a $16M California mansion that is on the verge of falling into the ocean, is refusing to leave his home.

82-year-old Lewis Bruggeman says his house is "fine" & isn't worried about it falling into the ocean after a recent storm eroded the cliffside.
