“Ubuntu” is a South African word that means “I am because we are.” In other words, we become our fullest selves through our investment in our communities.
It's unnecessary for all this legislation to get an initial vetting and votes in one day. A skeptical person might think that's being done deliberately so legislators don't have much time to think about each bill...and to stretch the advocates who are opposed rather thin. #lalege
Please call your representatives and ask them to vote against Gov Landry's punitive crime session bills, especially SB 11 and SB 3 (which would reduce the age that a child can be charged as an adult).
Thanks to representative @MattWillard97 who has been a true champion.
Ubuntu Village was at the Capitol today to fight against several pieces of legislation that target our Black children.
Harsh criminal justice policies not only hurt our families and communities - they also cost us money and do nothing to reduce crime.
HB 1 is the Doxxing bill that includes posting arrests of kids if they have a prior felony. Likely illegal under federal law. #lalege claims it’s about victim notification, despite $$$ spent on that. This will increase discrimination and crime.
"Ashley Hamilton, director of policy for the Louisiana Center for Children’s Rights, said... All the proposed legislation would do is ensure that children who commit nonviolent offenses would now be tossed into the same correctional facilities as 30- and 40-year-olds"...
Among other things, the public defense bill will:
*Cut district defender pay to 2007 salary levels and remove raises the public defender board gave out this past fall
*Make every public defender a contract worker instead of a public employee #lalege

Along with Sen. Reese, Rep. Debbie Villio has also refused to talk to the media before hearings for her bills tomorrow that together cost at least $19 million of extra expenses. One would eliminate parole for almost everyone after August. #lalege
Probably a good indicator of the way things are going at the Louisiana legislature is that an execution method described as torture by eyewitnesses passed unanimously and the only amendment was to *provide counseling services for the executioner*
Today is the beginning of a special legislative session that targets our Black children. Please follow the link below to contact your representative and tell them that incarcerating more children will not make us safer!

The city now has more live camera feeds (over 1200) than active NOPD officers, all watching 24 hours a day with superhuman vision.
Advocates worry that the NOPD's increased ability to surveil people for stop and frisks will amplify existing biases and abuses in the system.

Powerful words from @UbuntuNola's last newsletter:
"For the past 50 years, we have continued to turn to the same solutions to address problems in society. These solutions--more police, more incarceration, punitive laws, money diverted from families and communities..." (1/2)
