كان القناص الأمريكي كريس كايل (كريستوفر سكوت كايل) أحد أفراد قوات البحرية الأمريكية، وخدم أربع جولات قتالية في حرب العراق، وكان مسؤولًا عن قتل 160 عراقيًا. وكوفئ على ذلك بوسام النجمة الفضية، وثلاث ميداليات النجمة البرونزية، وميداليتي إنجاز القوات البحرية ومشاة البحرية.

كما صُنع عنه فيلم بعنوان American Sniper، المقتبس من مذكراته التي تحمل الاسم نفسه، وكان يتباهى علنًا بما فعله خلال الحرب في العراق.

وبعد دقائق من وصولهما إلى الميدان، أمسك روث بمسدسين وأطلق وابلًا من الرصاص على كريس كايل وصديقه تشاد ليتلفيلد، فأرداهما قتيلين في الحال.

وفي وقت لاحق، أُدين إدي راي روث بجريمتي القتل، وصدر بحقه حكم بالسجن مدى الحياة.

وأُقيمت له جنازة بموكب امتد لمسافة 200 ميل، من ميدلوثيان إلى أوستن.
