Earlier today, @DSamsonItodo spoke at a discussion on Strengthening Democratic Resilience in #Africa: Challenges and Opportunities co-hosted by @NEDemocracy @IFES1987 in Washington DC. In his presentation, he noted that while 46% of African countries are classified as “not free”, there are notable expressions of democratic resilience across the continent. He cited examples from Senegal, Botswana, Liberia, Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda etc where citizens are actively demanding a new social compact with political elites and democratic institutions are upholding constitutional order.

Despite the Nigerian Constitution mandating that local government areas should be run by elected councils, only 20 states and the FCT currently have elected local government councils. This has a direct impact on not just citizen participation in grassroots democracy but also on the quality of governance that they receive.
