My dear colleagues,
I am not saying this just because Ratan Tata is no more, but with humility, I believe we all agree that such extraordinary human beings are rare in today’s competitive world. You would all concur with that. As an administrator and a member of the Indian Administrative Service for over 31 years, I draw personal lessons from his life, which I feel are relevant for us in administration, governance, and public service. If we try to practice even a fraction of these values, it would be a true tribute to this great man.
Ratan Tata once said, “My father was upset, but I was finally my own, independent person in college. It was my grandmother who taught me that the *courage to speak up can also be soft.*"
At the age of 82, he reflected, “I’m still learning, so when you ask me to give advice, I feel like the ‘right advice’ changes over time—but the one thing that remains unchanged is the desire to do the right thing. So I’ll say this—leave the advice and *do the right thing, even if it isn’t the easiest. When you look back at your life, that’s what matters most.*”
He also shared, “Our grandmother taught us to *retain dignity at all costs, a value that has always stayed with me. It meant walking away from situations instead of fighting back.*”
I share these words today, not just because I feel obligated to say something on this solemn occasion, but because they resonate deeply with those of us navigating the complex world of public service in Bharat.
Om Shanti 🙏
PS: I was lucky to have met him in person only twice: standing near to him was such a great vibe, rather a divine feeling!

Heartbreaking news from EY Pune - a young CA succumbed to the work pressure and nobody from EY even attended her funeral - this is so appalling and nasty!!!
The Stoics understood justice differently—not simply as a noun but also as a verb. Justice is not something we get, but something we do. It is not something we demand from other people, but something we demand of ourselves.
