🚨🔵 I keep seeing people say, “Alonso needs to switch. He only wants to play 3-4-3.” But do you actually understand Alonso? 😂

He didn’t use a 3-4-3 at Real Madrid. And when he first arrived at Chelsea, we were playing with a back four in preseason. He has already shown that he adapts his system to the players and the situation.

For me, the reason he has leaned so heavily on the back three/back five is because Caicedo has been unavailable. We don’t have another midfielder who gives us the same defensive coverage, ball-winning and ability to protect the defence. So instead of exposing the back four even more, Alonso is adding another defender and trying to protect the team.

We’ve conceded seven goals in three Premier League games with a back five. That obviously isn’t good enough. But ask yourself this: if our midfield is struggling to stop teams from creating chances even with five defenders behind them, what happens if we remove one of those defenders?
