Abdirahman Cirro's latest comments regarding the history of the SNM are not just perplexing but a blatant distortion of the facts.

The SNM disbanded in 1991 following Somaliland's successful reclamation of its independence in Burao, where it was also unanimously agreed that Somaliland belongs to everyone, regardless of their past.

Cirro’s assertion now that the SNM is still active reveals a troubling detachment from reality and an evident disdain for a movement he neither participated in nor supported.

His passive nature is well-documented: where despite the fall of Siad Barre in 1991, he clung to his post in the Somalian embassy in Moscow until the mid-90s, only leaving when it became clear that no Somalian government was forthcoming.

Cirro's most notable achievements came after his return to Somaliland in the 2000s, during a period of peace and progress that he had no role in fostering. His and his party’s ongoing fascination with attacking the SNM only highlights his shortcomings rather than any valid criticism.

Cirro should be reminded that Somaliland is for all Somalilanders, irrespective of their past allegiances and despite his numerous attempts to fabricate an alternate history, everyone agrees that Somaliland owes its existence to the sacrifices of the SNM and the people of Somaliland, which he played no role in.

In the last months of this campaign season, Cirro and his campaign would do well to focus less on the SNM and more on addressing the widespread and legitimate concerns many SL voters have about him, his abilities, and his convictions.
