In country after country, opposition figures are arrested, prosecuted or threatened with treason charges after challenging those in power.

African governments must respect political freedoms, due process and the right of citizens to organise and challenge those who govern them.

When treason charges become a shortcut for dealing with political opponents, democracy itself is put on trial.

Uganda Government Writes Off UGX4.2b Tax Arrears for Uhuru Kenyatta Family-Owned Brookside

Uganda has written off UGX4.21 billion in corporate income tax arrears owed by Brookside Limited, the dairy processor largely owned by Kenya’s Kenyatta family. The government notice does not explain why the arrears were written off or the tax period covered. Brookside had not responded to inquiries by publication time.

Boda boda rider shot dead in Ndejje during street cleaning enforcement

38-year-old Ronald Kizito Jjuuko, was reportedly shot shortly after 7 am by Allan Okello, an officer attached to Ndejje police post as security deployed in the area began enforcing a directive requiring members of the public to participate in the three-hour cleaning exercise.

According to residents, Jjuuko was riding towards his home when he encountered police officers enforcing the restrictions. Hassan Ssezi, a resident of Kanaaba-Ndejje, said Jjuuko appeared not to have noticed the officers until he had passed their position.

“The officers were not even visible based on the area where they were standing. He had passed them a few metres when the officer shot him from behind, and he knocked the road barricade,” Ssezi said.
