I attended an event yesterday and sat at the high table beside my husband.

People came to greet everyone. When they got to me, instead of shaking my hand, they would tap my back. 😭

Then during kola sharing, my husband stepped out to take a call. When it got to our turn, I reached for the kola on his behalf.

They said, “No, a woman cannot put her hand in the kola plate. A man has to come and take it and give her.”

I was just sitting there thinking… ah ah. 😂

And then we hear, “Igbo women are bitter feminists. Igbo women are too independent.”

But sometimes, I wonder if we ever look at the way some Igbo men treat Igbo women in the name of tradition.

And the funniest part?

Some of these same men travel abroad and shake women’s hands without their ancestors filing a complaint.

So what exactly changes when you cross the Atlantic?
