I’m convinced that everyone should take a big swing at some point in their life and experience what it’s like to truly go all in on a meaningful pursuit otherwise they grow bitter with age.
Raising kids is a tough job. Raising boys? That’s another story.
My son is 9, right in his formative years, so there’s a lot I’m trying to teach him. But I want him to understand these lessons, not just follow them because I’m forcing him to.
Last night, he wanted to watch Happy Gilmore with me. But as a 40-plus man, I fell asleep 15 minutes in. He stayed in my room, watched both parts (apparently there’s a sequel?), and later slept in my bed. I woke up to find him sprawled out beside me. I went about my morning, and by past 10, he was still knocked out. So I woke him up, gave him a hug, asked about the movie, and told him to brush his teeth so he could eat. I noticed he had a bit of an attitude, but I let it slide.
During my usual morning check, I walked into his room and, surprise, it was a mess. I asked him to clean it up. He grumbled and half-cleaned, which, honestly, got me upset. We’ve been going back and forth about keeping his space tidy, so seeing him cut corners set me off. I called him over and told him I wasn’t satisfied. As I spoke, I could see him grumbling under his breath, that subtle defiance creeping in. The Nigerian father in me was already warming up the hot slap he was about to receive. Instead, I had a stern talk and told him to clean properly or the cane would come out.
About 10 minutes later, I made his breakfast and called him into the kitchen. Gently, I asked what the issue was and he said “Nothing.” But we’ve had conversations before about expressing himself, no matter how it comes out. His feelings are valid, and it’s my job to guide him through them. So I told him, “It’s okay to be grumpy, but it’s not okay to act defiant. I love you, and if something’s wrong, you can always talk to me.” He left without a word.
Then, 10 minutes later, he came back, climbed onto my lap, and said, “The reason I was grumpy is because I didn’t sleep well.” He explained how he kept waking up frustrated. I told him, “It’s valid to feel that way, but next time, tell me instead of taking it out when I ask you to do things.” I thanked him for opening up, we hugged, and now he’s in his room reading peacefully.
Sometimes, we need to learn to be safe spaces for our kids. Yes, there’s a thin line between discipline and respect, but no be everything way cane go solve. Your children have real feelings, and it’s your job to help them navigate those emotions. That way, they won’t hide things from you. they’ll trust you enough to speak up.
Translation: I tried to manipulate a guy who wanted to meet up with me into being needy but he didn't fall for it. So now I'm posting this for validation from strangers on the internet
Taiwo Awoniyi celebrated his first Premier League goal of the season by covering his face with shinpads.
They were inscribed with the Bible verse James 1:17: "Every good and perfect gift is from above." 🙏⚽
Earning this MBA was one of the most difficult and challenging things I have ever done in my whole life.
2024 is the year that pushed me beyond what I thought was my limit.
But guess who gets the glory in the end?
JESUS, the doer of every good thing.
