The father of Xi Jinping, Xi Zhongxun, is driven through a public humiliation parade during China’s Cultural Revolution in September 1967. A sign hanging around his neck labeled him a “traitor to the Party.”
Despite remaining loyal to the Communist Party throughout his life, Xi Zhongxun was purged in 1963 and later harshly persecuted during China’s Cultural Revolution. He was imprisoned and separated from his family for years.
As a result, his son, Xi Jinping, was sent to the countryside as a teenager to perform rural labor as part of the “sent-down youth” movement.
