Here is another report of Police Extortion at Bodija in Ibadan! 💔

‘Around 10:00 AM, while on my way to the gym, I was stopped on bike and instructed to get down. I complied. The officers then requested access to my phone, which I initially declined to provide. However, they threatened to escalate the situation and take me to an undisclosed location if I refused, so I felt compelled to hand over my phone.

They thoroughly searched my device but did not find any incriminating evidence. However, they saw forex and cryptocurrency-related content and used this as a basis to accuse me of cybercrime. I explained that I work as a Customer Support representative for a forex company based in Australia and even offered to contact my employer to verify my employment. Despite this, the situation was escalated, and additional officers became involved. They began speaking to me aggressively and used abusive language.

One of the officers then suggested that I should “do the normal thing,” implying that I should pay them to resolve the matter. I explained that I did not have money on me. They demanded ₦200,000 and threatened to take me to their office and detain me if I failed to comply. After about thirty minutes of pleading, they reduced the amount to ₦30,000.

I had to call a friend to borrow ₦20,000 to add to the money I already had in order to make up the ₦30,000. Although I offered to transfer the money electronically, they insisted that I withdraw cash from a nearby POS stand beside Item 7. They held onto my bag, which contained my gym belongings, while I withdrew the cash. I then handed over the ₦30,000 in cash to them.

After collecting the money, one of the officers pulled me into their van and stated that he wanted to record a video. He asked for my name and other personal details, and then asked, “Do you agree to being guilty of fraud?” I responded, “No.” Immediately, another officer shouted at me, and I was placed under intense pressure and duress to say “Yes.” Feeling intimidated and threatened, I complied out of fear.

Following this, the officer made inappropriate remarks, advising me to engage in fraud to earn more money, stating that at my age I should be able to afford ₦30,000 without difficulty. He also requested my phone number, which I provided. After this, I was allowed to leave.

Attached is a copy of the ₦20,000 transfer receipt sent to me by my friend, as well as the ₦30,700 POS withdrawal receipt, which includes the applicable withdrawal charges.’
