My friend roundtripped $400k paper gains into $8k this cycle
Asked what he should do next.
My advice: stop trying to make money in crypto. Start making money because you understand crypto.
The path from zero to success in crypto still works in 2026. The industry is still meritocratic, it still rewards people who demonstrate skills over credentials.
If you're starting from scratch:
→ Learn fundamentals through doing, not just reading. Use testnets, join DAOs, participate in governance.
→ Get visible. Your X profile is your resume now. Use AI at your own risk
→ Lean into the skills you already have, help people, support projects, be present. Most of that starts with free work but lead to real gigs.
→ Pick a niche and go deep. Be known as "the guy" for it
However, if you already understand crypto and know your way around the space, there are paths opening up that don't involve trading or building protocols.
I've seen people do well:
→ Consulting for traditional companies exploring crypto (your knowledge is scarce outside CT)
→ Freelancing for crypto projects that need help with content, community, or strategy for attracting a web2 audience
→ Advising businesses on how blockchain might fit their operations
→ Taking their skills to adjacent industries (fintech, AI) where crypto experience is valued
They're not guaranteed plays, but the knowledge you've built has value in places you might not be looking
Most people who understand crypto stay competing inside crypto, but what you know is actually rare outside this bubble
If you've been degening, pivot to crypto's ethos
Here's how:
→ Join communities building things, not communities shilling things (CT isn't the only crypto native place)
→ Stop asking "wen token," start asking "how do they make money"
→ Find projects solving real-world problems, not meta-crypto problems
→ Look for fundamentals instead of hype
→ Look for teams who can both build and distribute
→ Read audits and docs, not just TG alpha channels
→ Think 3-5 years, not 3-5 months
If you're exhausted from 700 days of rugs and you want something different, just know there's a whole other side of crypto that compounds regardless of token price
You just have to look past CT
