Every community should ask ChatGPT or Claude to analyze their schools correlation between test scores, A-G pass rates, and graduation rates. Hold schools accountable.
@mattyglesias I don’t think the public has any idea that being ashamed for being American based on race or economic class is engrained in the education system. Not necessarily teachers, but definitely admin, school boards, and teacher education institutions.
The first thing I do on the first day of my Gov/Econ class is tell my Seniors that America is exceptionally awesome, and then I show them the data that explains the why.
Ronald Reagan: “You can go to live in France, but you cannot become a Frenchman…But Anyone, from any corner of the Earth, can come to live in America and become an American…This, I believe, is one of the most important sources of America's greatness.”🇺🇸
@ModeledBehavior Going to an expensive college and getting an expensive Master’s Degree does not get you better pay or make you a better teacher. This not new information.
So basically schools are allowing it to happen.
Maybe we should drop the “have fun” and “guaranteed graduation” narrative and start to make our institutions more important and relevant.
Grade level data in 13 states show the surge in absenteeism was not a pandemic cohort effect.
Students who never attended during the pandemic have similarly elevated chronic absenteeism.
New report on Chronic Absenteeism across 45 states.
Upshot? Progress continues, and continues to slow.
Down over 2.5 pct pts in 2023.
Down over 2 pts in 2024.
Down less than 1 pt in 2025.
I’m happy with the results.
But in reading the opinions I’m watching SCOTUS accepting presidential executive orders as more or less constitutional as a very big red flag.
The court strikes down President Trump's executive order on birthright citizenship, holding that children born in the U.S. to parents unlawfully or temporarily present are “subject to the jurisdiction” of the U.S. and are citizens at birth.

The first opinions are in the transgender athlete cases. In B.P.J., the court holds Title IX allows schools to provide separate women’s and men’s teams defined by biological sex, and WV has permissibly maintained female sports for biological females.

We have Italians discovering free refills,
Japanese discovering unlimited chips and salsa, and Germans road tripping the country becoming Ella Fellas.
In this USA 250 simulation, it’s quite simple, we’re winning the World Cup.
I live near Dr. Tucker and really got into her work. I also watched other teachers try and replicate it. What I saw is that if each station had a dedicated expert (rare, but some paras were excellent), it was great.
Otherwise it was a mess and an underutilization of time.
One of the most common objections I hear from teachers about station rotation is that it means planning 3 or 4 lessons instead of 1.
But a typical lesson already has a warm-up, a mini-lesson, a paired discussion, and practice...that's already several activities happening in one period! 👀
Station rotation just asks you to take what's already there and decide which parts work better as a station.
Capitalism (land/labor/capital use decided by individuals), socialism (land/labor/capital use decided by government). Representative government making choices is better, but government making the choice is still socialism.
We can measure the good/bad of both at the margins.
Dear God. Social services and infrastructure paid for by taxes voted on by the representatives of the people do not constitute socialism. Socialism is, you know, the government disallowing private property throwing people in gulags.
@jpodhoretz@CliffordAsness It’s pretty clear that people have no idea what capitalism (land/labor/capital use decided by individuals) and socialism (land/labor/capital use decided by government) actually are.
Once again, nearly all of these SCOTUS decisions can be changed by Congress: late arriving mail ballots, partisan gerrymandering, student loan debt forgiveness, asylum at the southern border, TPS designations, tariffs…
If you don’t like the decision: LOBBY CONGRESS!
The first opinion is in Watson v. RNC, the mail-in ballot case. The court holds that nothing in the federal election-day statutes requires ballots to be received by Election Day in order to be counted.

Good thread here.
So much of what we do now is about students “feeling better”, and I watch all the self reporting surveys presented to school boards perpetuate that narrative.
But it’s a lie that makes the institution shallow and less academically relevant.
Mindfulness programs for schools are often popular, but the evidence strongly suggests they’re either useless or even harmful. Lots of people *want* them to work, but that only increases the chance of motivated reasoning and bias. 🧵
