Suicide is a cry for help, not a criminal act. Decriminalising attempted suicide in Malawi is a very important step toward mental health justice and destigmatization. #SupportNotPunish#MentalHealthForAll
As Honorable Peter Dimba has said โFor a person to get to a point of trying to eliminate their life it means mentally they were disturbed due to various reasons and therefore I would urge government to amend the Penal Code so that suicide attempt should not be criminal.โ
On April 11th of 2025 Mental Health Bill No. 17 was passed replacing The Mental Health Treatment act of 1948. The new bill is a human-rights based approach to mental health in Malawi however under section 229 of the Malawi penal code attempted suicide is still criminalized. 1/3
We at Ukuthula call for attempted suicide to be decriminalized, with rising suicide cases in Malawi all efforts must be made towards quality and accessible mental health care & the destigmatization of mental health so people are able to seek the help they need.
We are compiling a directory of mental health service providers in Malawi, we will be adding on over time. Here are some of the mental health service providers we have ๐.
