Every time I return to Kramatorsk, it’s surprising how much closer the sounds of the front line are. The region spends most days on red alert due to Shahed, FPVs, and KABs. Over the last few years, volunteers in the region including myself have worked throughout air alerts because otherwise very little would get done. Recently, however, that has become increasingly difficult as attacks have intensified. I've talked in previous stories about how war destroys one city while preparing another for destruction, creating a seemingly endless cycle of war. Unfortunately, for cities like Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, today that has become a reality. Shahed are not a primary concern in this region. While they can cause significant damage, it’s relatively localised and has become part of every day life for many people still living here. FPV attacks have increased dramatically. The human safari has become a constant threat to the civilians who remain and while driving, drone detectors and jammers are very important for safety. What most people fear most in the region are KABs. The direct impact causes devastating local destruction, but the shockwave reaches far beyond the point of impact. Apartment blocks, vehicles, businesses, vets, schools and hospitals are severely damaged even when they are not directly hit. The street in the attached video is in the centre of Kramatorsk and as we walked the entire street there was not one building which had not been damaged. The reason? The street has been hit with 15 KAB’s this year alone and after leaving only three weeks ago it has been struck a couple more times. More noticeable though, we were the only people there! At the top of the street in the attached picture is where 7 people were killed at the beginning of May 2026 and will now remain in ruins indefinitely like so much more of the city. While I was there one of my very close friends needed to remove items from his apartment which suffered damage from a shock wave. It’s only when inside you see the destruction does not stop on the external face of the building. Internal doors cracked, glass and belongings everywhere leaving the apartment useless. Even with all this devastation, the military, civilian and animal volunteers, vets, doctors, postal workers and more continue to work with what they have left. All are import causes in Donetsk Region which needs serious help before it’s too late. The reality of life in Kramatorsk today is being hunted by FPV drones. We picked up the signal of one nearby and can see the same picture as the Russian operator.
