Chaos erupts as Spanish police try to raid illegal criminal "migrants" in Mallorca. they engage in illegal street trade, selling drugs, prostitution, and stolen goods to anyone stupid enough to buy (like tourists), undercutting and harming local Spanish shopkeepers operating legitimate businesses.

🇩🇰 Nikolaj Arcel's "The Promised Land", beautifully conveys the atmosphere, endless challenges, and the human costs of 'frontier' Danish life. The film centers on the real Captain Ludvig von Kahlen (c. 1700–1774), a humble officer, in the mid-1750s under King Frederick V, sought permission to cultivate the Jutland heath (Alheden area) in exchange for a noble title and manor!

It accurately captures the crown’s interest in settling the Jutland heath with German colonists. Much of the film was shot near actual historical sites associated with Kahlen’s efforts (around Kongenshus).

Ultimately he failed. Jutland's extremely harsh conditions and German colonists who kept "leaving", forced him to return to Fladstrand (present-day Frederikshavn), in northern Jutland where his home was.

I watched it once again because it's so engaging. It's a great entry point for anyone interested in Kahlen or Jutland; It's not a documentary-style biopic, it's a dramatic well directed and produced life story that keeps you wanting to see more.
