One of Musk’s favorite words—and concepts—was “hardcore.”

He used it to describe the workplace culture he wanted when he founded Zip2, and he would use it almost thirty years later when he upended the nurturing culture at Twitter.

As the Model S production line ramped up, he spelled out his creed in a quintessential email to employees, titled “Ultra hardcore.”

It read,

I am finished with the aggressive part of putting my .SI portfolio together.

Here is my complete .si portfolio of 90 names. I invested in array of strategic names. It doesn't take that many to get a seat at the table.

And the bonus is I get to look at it through the eye of a domain investor, which keeps me safe, and then through the eye of a builder that allows me to dream.

I have a well rounded group of names of which one success pays for all others. That's been my formula for 30 years. It's a group. It's a seat at the table. I don't have to have 89 winners. I have to have one or two winners that make the others not losers.

And as I do with so many other things, I built this portfolio in front of everybody in exactly one week. From nothing. From scratch. I'm comfortable with my acquisitions. It's like popcorn. They don't all have to pop for it to be a winner.

And just like the beanstalk, these were me planting seeds. You have to plant seeds before you can reap the rewards. Some of them are gonna germinate. Some of them won't. Maybe none of them will germinate.

But I have 6500 others that just takes one to germinate. It won't matter, and that's the point you're buying time and you're expanding at the same moment. And when you do your job right, everything pays for itself, and the risk is minimal.
