DA’s John Steenhuisen Says “Anti-Foreigner Incitement” and Ethnic Nationalism Are Exploiting South Africa’s Problems to Fuel Division

Outgoing Democratic Alliance leader John Steenhuisen warned of growing illiberalism in South Africa during his farewell address at the party’s Federal Congress on Saturday. He described ethnic nationalism, anti-foreigner incitement, and efforts to exploit the country’s problems as manifestations of this trend that drive division.

The speech was delivered to over 2,000 delegates at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, Johannesburg. “Ethnic nationalism, anti-foreigner incitement, and a drive to exploit our country’s problems to drive division, are all manifestations of this growing illiberalism,” Steenhuisen said. He added that new forces aim to replace the DA’s inclusive vision with division, nationalism, populism and hatred, and that this agenda must be rejected at all costs.

Steenhuisen highlighted the DA’s entry into the Government of National Unity after the 2024 elections. “The formation of the GNU is precious, and it is historic, and an opportunity to unite those who want to build a better country across all those old dividing lines of race, class, language, and religion,” he said. He noted that South Africa now has a more moderate, inclusive and diverse government than two years ago.
