The 1999 Elistanzhi Massacre

On October 7, 1999, the Chechen village of Elistanzhi was bombed by Russian warplanes.

The attack, timed to coincide with Putin’s birthday, targeted the village school and civilian homes.

The wooden school building was hit directly while classes were in session, so most of those killed were children.

At least 35 civilians were killed, and another 60 people were wounded or left disabled.

Those killed included infants, children up to the age of 14, and elderly people over 60. Twenty-three of the wounded were children.
