My god, you can just tell haddockkkk's hands were all over this. Riot you gotta let them work on every Ekko thing forever I swear holy shit Ekko and Akali look so good.
Vic Mensa ain't even get to spit a hot 16 like Thutmose and Duckwrth. Sofia Reyes got her 2 sentences in. That being said, the song is fine. Riot's sound is so homogenized now though that this kind of just melts together with almost all the other worlds anthems.
Waited 7 years for a True Damage comeback just for them to be 1% of the music video. Ekko's new skin has default animations and vo. Senna, Yasuo and Qiyana got a shared splash art. Promo was nonstop reused 2019 Ekko assets except one. Almost no interactions. I'm not moved.
Yeah, there's just no beating OG True Damage Ekko. I can see why they don't give him skins often. He really is in Arcane and True Damage prison. Yes he got Pulsefire in 2019 but it's ugly so who cares. Star Guardian Prestige was cute at least, but it's looking bleak Ekko fam. 2XKO was our last hope.
@IncroyableSauce Their statement also ignores the hordes of slop manga that is out there lol. Every medium has a bunch of garbage sitting around, it’s up to you to sift through and find the gems or whatever you like.
Marvel Mangaverse: Web of Destiny #1 was a fun story. Kenny Ruiz on pencils and Noiry on colors are an absolute dream team. No complaints here besides Miles’s hair situation, which is beyond ass.
While I enjoyed the narrative, it kind of renders the other stories—Iron Knight, Ghostlocke, and Arcane Avengers—pointless. They all ended as if they were going to culminate in some grand battle in Web of Destiny #1, only for those characters to play no part in the final battle and get a single panel of acknowledgment.
After the blunder that was Spider-Versity, I’m more cognizant of the Kellys’ writing choices regarding Miles. The Miles Morales/Illyana Rasputin/Laura Kinney trio depicted here in the Mangaverse is definitely a highlight, but I can’t help but feel that the Kellys default to writing Miles as passive and reactive. I’d imagine they were going for a Yuji-after-Sukuna-levels-Shibuya moment with Miles, but it doesn’t really work when all Miles does across these two issues is shoot one of his best friends in the head and sing “Why Can’t We Be Friends?” while the world ends.
In anime terms, Mangaverse Miles is kind of an amalgam of Naruto, Sasuke, and Yuji, with Blackheart as his Sukuna. Functionally, though, he’s just the straight man of his group—or rather, a bad shonen love interest—while Mangaverse Magik and Laura actually do all the cool Naruto and Sasuke stuff.
Overall, the art and central trio make this a fun read, but the payoff is a little hollow and Miles’s role is too passive to land the big emotional beat. Worth it for the visuals and the Magik/Laura dynamic; frustrating if you were hoping the other stories would matter.
Miles Morales: Spider-Man #2 | Okay issue. Light on action, but I didn’t mind—Miles’ personal life is the draw for me. Valentina is reading him like a book; she’ll figure out he’s Spidey soon, and since she’s only an exchange student for a year, it’s low stakes. Miles filing her under “normal” despite all the Chernobyl mentions is gonna bite him in the ass later lol. More Starling/Tiana mentions.
Jefferson S.H.I.E.L.D flashbacks are cool, but Revenant is bland—stoic Thor villain of the week reject, meh design/motive. Raneem was ridiculous but fun; this guy’s just kinda boring. Leon/Valenza art/colors are spectacular as always. Enjoyable enough, feel like this arc needed the double-sized treatment. Haven’t written it off, but I'm left wanting more. Decent book so far, eager to let Bryan Edward Hill work.
