We are a reasonable and tolerant country. The problem is that tolerance only works when it is mutual.

Britain has spent decades bending over backwards to accommodate others, often while being told our history, culture, traditions and concerns are somehow unacceptable. Events such as the murder of Henry Nowak and countless other cases where innocent people have paid the ultimate price for failed policies have understandably exhausted much of the public's patience.

People are not becoming less tolerant because they are hateful. Many are becoming less tolerant because they feel their goodwill has been taken for granted, their concerns ignored, and their safety treated as secondary to political narratives.

British people remain among the most tolerant and welcoming people on Earth. But tolerance is not an unlimited resource. It depends on trust, respect, shared values and the belief that those in power are putting the interests and safety of citizens first.

When those things break down, asking people for more tolerance without addressing the reasons behind their concerns is unlikely to solve the problem.

One of the laziest political slogans in modern Britain is the claim that "Britain was built by immigrants."

No, it wasn't.

Britain was built by the British people. It was built by generations who created our laws, institutions, industries, armed forces, infrastructure, language, culture and traditions over centuries.

Migration has existed throughout history. Nobody disputes that. But that's not the same as claiming Britain was founded by immigration.

By the time modern mass immigration began after WWII, Britain had already produced the Industrial Revolution, built the world's largest empire, developed parliamentary democracy, established the Royal Navy as the dominant force on Earth, and created many of the institutions that still shape the modern world.

A nation can welcome newcomers. A nation can benefit from newcomers. But newcomers cannot build a country that already existed long before they arrived.

The United Kingdom was not created by modern immigration. It was created by the historic peoples of these islands and generations of Britons who built and defended it.

History matters. Facts matter. And slogans are not a substitute for either.
