Snapshots of the interviews we carried out in Akorede area, Ijora-Badia, Lagos State. We interviewed a cutter who does 'home service' for people and collects 2,500 NGN. Even his daughter was mutilated at 1 month. View the cutting tool! #Breaktherazor#EndFGM
The psychological effects of FGM which is part of the long-term effects of the practice is experienced by many women. After they endure the gruesome pain, some live with the psychological trauma years on, which is detrimental to the mental wellbeing of women and girls

“...I rebelled against it first because it has affected me personally, and secondly because I am a midwife and in my profession, I see on a daily basis how women’s bodies are damaged by this practice.
...I just kind of exploded. I have been fighting the practice ever since.”
“I would like to be a doctor when I finish my studies and an anti-FGM activist to speak up for other girls who are at risk of going through the cut and early forced marriage. I would also like to stand up for other girls and not let any other girl go through what I went through”
FGM violates the right to freedom from violence and the right to physical integrity- including the right to freedom from torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment, the right to dignity, and even the right to life of the act of FGM results in death.

The WHO FGM Cost Calculator has two primary functions. It estimates the current and projected financial health care cost associated with FGM in specific countries, as well as the potential cost savings to health systems of reducing new cases of FGM

High prevalence of FGM can cause a significant economic burden to health systems and national budgets, affecting expenditures related to treating acute as well as long term physical, mental and sexual health complications throughout a woman’s life course.

✏️WHO
A girl or woman’s FGM status can affect how she engages with and participates in society, as well as the way society views her. Risk of stigmatization depends on whether a girl or woman is living in a society where FGM is a social norm or one where she is rejected.

WHY?? 🤦🏽♀️😞😢
In early February, a doctor was arrested in Egypt after a 12-year-old girl bled to death after he performed FGM on her without anesthesia

FGM perpetuates gender equality and outrighly negates the inherent human right to dignity, security and liberty. A woman's rights are violated only when she is interfered with coercively, or there is a threat of forced loss to freedom or life.

#EndFGM
The social and economic consequences of FGM not only hinder individual girls and women from thriving but also hold back countries. When women fail to reach their fullest potential, this in turn impedes the development of their communities.

While substantial progress has been made, SDG Goal 5 (Target 5.3) is an aggressive goal that requires accelerated action.
By 2030, MORE THAN a third of all births worldwide will be in 30 of the countries where FGM is widely practiced, putting tens of millions of girls at risk.
DID YOU KNOW? 😱
Currently, 15 states in the United States have NO LAWS criminalizing FGM: Alabama, Alaska, Connecticut, Hawaii, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Vermont, Washington and Wyoming

WE ARE WITH UNFPA 🙌🏽
Education is a particularly powerful tool for boosting equality. Men should use their privilege to raise the value of girls in the society not contribute to causing them pain

“It is done because of culture. My parents probably felt pressured and that they were doing the right thing; maybe they thought that I would not find a man if I didn’t have it done. It is an old-fashion mentality to carry on tradition which in this modern ages make no sense.”
