Sport, Inclusion and the Foundations of Peace

A strong sporting ecosystem begins with a fundamental commitment of ensuring that every young person has a fair opportunity to participate, regardless of geography.

In Jammu & Kashmir, a geographically diverse Union Territory with remote, hilly and border communities we are taking a district-wise approach to sports infrastructure—mapping existing facilities, identifying gaps, improving utilisation and planning new investments around actual community needs. With 227 new projects involving over ₹500 crore ( 52.3 Million) the priority now is to translate investment into accessible, functional spaces where young people can play, train, compete and grow.

For me, beyond infrastructure, it's about creating pathways for young people to connect, develop discipline and confidence, discover talent and participate meaningfully in their communities.

The focus will remain on reaching underserved, remote, border and hilly areas, while strengthening the links between schools, coaches, sporting institutions and emerging athletes.
Sport can be a powerful language of inclusion and shared purpose. Our responsibility is to ensure that opportunity speaks that language everywhere.

@listenshahid Physical Education candidates, including M.P.Ed. & Ph.D. scholars, yet regular recruitment of PE teachers/lecturers has remained absent for several yrs.

If we r serious abt developing sports at the grassroots level, who will train, guide & nurture these young athletes?

The Govt of J&K is requested to kindly conduct timely recruitment so that one does not have to wait for 6-7 years for a recruitment.

A recruitment process should nt take 6 yrs to conclude especially when it involves only 5 posts. The assistant PTI in HED recruitment advertised in 2020 has taken nearly 6 yrs to reach the joining stage.

Today I began what I hope will be a meaningful chapter as Commissioner/Secretary, Youth Services & Sports, J&K.

My first day began on the snow slopes of Gulmarg, at the inauguration of the 6th Khelo India Winter Games, alongside Hon'ble LG Sh. Manoj Sinha and Hon'ble CM Sh. Omar Abdullah.

Over 400 athletes from 25 States raced these slopes today. Six consecutive years, Gulmarg has hosted this national event. It has earned its place as India's winter sports capital.

J&K's youth and sporting talent are extraordinary. I am here to serve them — and to learn.

This was some first day.
