I lived in Cyprus for two years

My time spent on the island was very important for me to understand the reality

Cyprus is not a frozen conflict as many would want it to be but for all of us an ongoing occupation that the international system has chosen not to resolve

In 1974 Turkish forces invaded and seized the northern part of the island.

What followed was settlement, property seizure, and demographic change carried out under military protection.

Hundreds of thousands of its citizens remain displaced and the diplomatic process continues to treat the aggressor and the victim as roughly equivalent “sides” in need of mutual compromise.

Prolonged occupation is gradually rebranded as a complex dispute and endless talks become a substitute for consequences.

Stability is preferred to justice because justice would require confronting a NATO member and upsetting existing arrangements.

But the longer the occupation lasts without cost, the more permanent it becomes.

A serious policy would begin from the actual situation.

That means that turkish troops would leave and illegal settlement would be reversed

And luckily the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus over the whole island would be restored.

I saw the abandoned homes and the acceptance that this is simply how things are now.

European and Western institutions still possess the will to treat it as such, or whether they have decided that some violations of sovereignty are simply too inconvenient to reverse.

I don’t accept this reality personally
