How to bootstrap crypto as a consumer-friendly payment method

When I joined Coinbase in 2014, my first job was trying to get merchants to accept Bitcoin payments. (I worked with @NTmoney on this.)

Bitcoin as a consumer payment method didn't work out for a few reasons:

1. Clunky UX — after scanning a QR code, you had to send the exact amount of Bitcoin from your wallet; prices could also fluctuate during the checkout flow

2. Small user base — population of people with a bitcoin wallet was probably closer to 10M in 2014.

3. Lack of incentives — no incentive for consumers to overcome the clunky UX. Further, credit and even some debit cards offered cash back and points.

Fast forward 10 years, consumer adoption of crypto payments is still low. However, we have the possibility of significantly improved UX thanks to faster, cheaper and smarter blockchains, stablecoins, and 100M+ consumers with a fiat-connected crypto account.

Revisiting "What I'm excited for this build cycle"

Two years ago today, I wrote a post on what I was excited for during the newly begun crypto winter (post-Terra, pre-FTX, most people were in denial).

I wanted to revisit the list to see if / what progress had been made.

1. The Merge is successful and energy use meme goes away.

It happened. It was and the only people who are complaining are intellectually dishonest members of Elizabeth Warren's anti-crypto army.

2. One of the Ethereum L2s breaks away from the pack, de-risking tech choice for builders.

It happened. Base was the clear break out but I would say there's progress in the Optimism and Polygon ecosystems.

3. More practical implementations of zero-knowledge proofs (e.g. Dark Forest) enabling consumer use cases, e.g. trustless anonymous polls or token-enabled experiences.

Not yet. There have been a few interesting experiments from Personae and Opacity, but nothing break out.

We're decentralizing Farcaster channels

Channels will be onchain and sovereign, similar to user accounts. If you build a community, the membership is yours, not a centralized platform.

Additionally, the protocol version of channels will give channel creators flexibility around ownership, moderation and economics.

We're hoping to have channels fully decentralized—i.e. zero dependencies on Warpcast—by the end of the summer.
