Canada has many interesting roadside attractions and I am looking at the history of many of them.
Today, it is the Giant Squid in Glovers Harbour, Newfoundland and Labrador.
The story of why there is a giant squid statue in Glovers Harbour dates back to Nov. 2, 1878 when a live animal reported to be 15.8 metres long, was found aground offshore.
When it was found, it was secured to a tree with a rope and hook where it died after the tide receded. No part of the animal was saved and no photographs were taken. Much of it was cut up for dog food.
For many years, Guinness World Records recognized the squid as the largest giant squid ever recorded. Today, it is believed the size of the squid may have been exaggerated.
In 2001, to honour the history of the area related to the squid, the giant squid sculpture was constructed near where the specimen was found. The construction was partially paid for by a $100,000 contribution from the government.
The squid weighs four tonnes and is made of steel, wire mesh and concrete. It was designed by Don Foulds out of Saskatoon and built by him and his art students.
In 2009, a heritage centre and a small museum with picnic area was constructed.
The sculpture was featured on a stamp in 2011. An annual festival is also held at the site.
