October 7. We remember.
After Black July, one truth feels clearer than ever:
violence against civilians leaves wounds far beyond the day itself.
We remember the innocent lives taken.
May their memory inspire dignity, justice, and hope.
Conversation with Sheikh Hikmat el HiJri about Jihadism
I had a phone conversation with Sheikh Hikmat el Hijri, spiritual leader of the Druse community in Syria, and the leader of the Bashan nation, in his headquarters in Souaida, while the governorate has been under attack by Jihadists.
I received from him a briefing about the situation in general and the humanitarian state of affairs in the area in particular. Basically, the community (Druse and Christians) is under siege in the city, and dozens of villages are occupied by jihadi militias backed by the regime.
For a second year, the tens of thousands of students from Souaida have not been able to complete their school year across Syria, kidnapped women are still unheard from, and attempts by armed jihadis are still taking place around the Druse and Christian areas.
Sheikh al Hijri said he values President Trump statements and actions against terrorism worldwide including against al Qaeda, ISIS, and especially whom he qualified as jihadists in recent weeks. The leader of the Jabal Bashan nation, an ancient population that lived since before the Caliphate, the Crusades, and the Ottoman Sultanate, between Jabal Druse, NW Jordan and modern day Israel, said he and his community want only Peace between all nations in the region and wish to practice their right for self determination along with the same right given by the United Nations to all peoples of the world.
Unfortunately, the jihadi forces in the region reject that right to others and punish any community, calling for freedom and security. The Sheikh, whom I likened last year to George Washingtom of the Bashan country is indeed seeking independence from the Syrian Arab Republic in asmuch as Bosnia, Kosovo and South Sudan sought self-determination to their peoples. The Bashan people will establish the best relations with the rest of Syria, like the Czeck Republic and the Republic of Slovakia or East Timor and Indonesia.
Sheikh Hikmat urged civil society groups and lawmakers in the region and the free world to offer aid and political support to the beleaguered community in south Syria. He added that his people thanked Israel for saving Druse and Christians in Souaida in July 2025, but the wish of the local population is to live in Peace and establish trade. The leader of Bashan agreed on visiting the US, Saudi Arabia, Israel and any country that can help in ending the war in Syria. He said "we will look at all options except to be dissolved under the power that committed genocide against our people."
I told him that as a citizen of the United States, I pray and hope that his community is protected and safe. But dialogue with the great American people is a must, perhaps first between representatives of the local Souaida "parliament" and the US Congress. But there must be a way to preserve peace and freedom across Syria.

Suwayda has lived under a prolonged blockade for more than a year.
Since July 2025, restrictions on roads, fuel, electricity, water and civilian supplies have repeatedly tightened and eased — but never truly ended.
After a year of recurring pressure, simply restoring services after each crisis is no longer enough.
Suwayda needs a permanent, safe and internationally guaranteed alternative civilian, humanitarian and commercial corridor — so no party can weaponize access to fuel, medicine, essential goods or basic services.
These are rights, not bargaining chips.
And humanitarian concern must not depend on media visibility or geopolitical convenience.
Human rights lose their meaning when applied selectively.

Full 16-minute statement from Sheikh Hikmat al-Hajari in Sweida on August 24, 2026, now available with complete English and Hebrew subtitles, providing the full context behind the viral video clips circulating online.
An exceptional exam session is not a favor.
Sweida’s students have the right to take their exams in their usual recognized centers, including Sweida city.
No student should have to cross lines of control for education.
Education is a right not leverage.

• Sweida is still standing.
But no community should have to stand alone.
Its people still believe in dignity, freedom, and the fundamental right to live.
This is not only the story of one community.
It is a test of whether the world still believes that every human life has equal value.
Silence in the face of injustice does not contain it. It allows it to grow.
Today it is Sweida. Tomorrow it could be another community, another people, another innocent family.
Justice delayed is not only a tragedy for its victims. It is a risk to us all.
Those who believe in justice already know what the right thing is.
History will remember not only those who committed injustice, but also those who had the power to make a difference…
and chose to remain silent.
🚨 #Breaking: The National Guard in #Suwayda says forces aligned with the #Islamist Damascus #HTS/#Julani de-facto authorities violated the ceasefire overnight, alleging the use of drones and heavy weapons against both frontline positions and residential neighborhoods.
According to the statement, the attacks killed one person and wounded several others before National Guard units responded to the reported sources of fire.
‼️- Every ceasefire violation pushes civilians deeper into danger. Protect civilians. Restore accountability.

BREAKING: Islamists are reportedly attacking Druze in Syria, attempting to commit yet another massacre.
The Middle East is essentially Muslims and minorities constantly under attack by Islamists.
The greatest danger is not disagreement.
It is when disagreement becomes division.
History remembers many battles.
But it remembers one lesson even more:
A house divided invites every storm.
Bashan.
One root. One future.
‼️🇺🇳 The @UN Statement Raises More Questions Than Answers.
The United Nations has announced that talks regarding end-of-year examinations for Sweida’s students were unable to overcome the existing challenges, and that the exams will proceed in Rural Damascus.
For many families in Sweida, this outcome is deeply disappointing. The central concern was never the examinations themselves, but the safety of thousands of students who may be required to travel under difficult and disputed security conditions.
If the stated priorities were student safety and the integrity of the examination process, many will ask why alternative arrangements inside Sweida could not be secured despite weeks of discussions and proposed guarantees.
The result leaves thousands of students and their families facing uncertainty, while the concerns that prompted the negotiations in the first place remain unresolved
• In Sweida, a suspect linked to the July attacks and massacres was detained for investigation within a local security framework.
As with any investigation, the outcome should be either confirmed charges or release if no evidence is proven.
Shortly after, an entire civilian family from Sweida including children and an infant was kidnapped outside the region in an apparent attempt to pressure for the suspect’s release.
According to local reports, the family was later moved from the Damascus area to Homs.
This raises a serious question:
How can armed kidnapping networks move families and children across multiple controlled areas with such freedom unless there is tolerance, coordination, or deliberate negligence?
Yet some platforms still try to portray both incidents as the same thing.
They are not.
There is a fundamental difference between investigating a suspect connected to documented massacres and war crimes, and kidnapping innocent civilians to use them as bargaining tools.
Civilians are not bargaining chips.
Justice cannot be built through the kidnapping of families and children.

• Images from Shahba, northern Sweida, show reported damage to a school following the airstrikes on May 2, 2026.
Civilian infrastructure must not be affected under any circumstances.
It is not acceptable to label an entire region and its people based on unverified claims.
Drug trafficking in southern Syria is a complex, cross-border issue that has historically involved multiple areas and networks.
Addressing it requires credible evidence —not selective narratives.
Sweida has clearly stated its position:
against drug networks, and in support of transparency.
What is needed now is a credible, independent investigation under international oversight, with clear guarantees for accountability.
Stability is built on facts — not assumptions.
