この芦屋市長のもとで学校に通えるなんて、なんと最高の環境なんだろうと思う。

そしてもし、民主主義でない学校に通っていると感じる人がいるなら、このエピソードを知ってほしい。

私の中高には、生徒会が無かった。
校長の裏金問題を機に、ずっと「検討します」と潰され続けた生徒会構想は、ついに実現した。
裏金問題に対する保護者への説明会の場に生徒として一人で乗り込み、
「これまでの校風は私たち生徒にも責任がある。これからは生徒がこの学校を作るために、生徒会を作らせてほしい」
その言葉に拍手が起き、新校長は「すでに動きがあります」と答えた。
その場で翌���の選挙を約束させた。
あのとき私は、パブリックリレーションズという戦略を身体で学んだ。

「高校は勉強する場で、生徒会はいらない」と授業中叱責する教師には、
「ありがとうございます。良い演説機会をいただきました。」と返し、民主主義の必要性を説いた。それもまた、民主主義を学ぶ授業の一つだった。

初代生徒会長に選挙で選ばれてから、「男女交際禁止」という校則に対し、「なぜ恋愛はいけないのか」という生徒の問いに私はこう答えた。
「交際は禁止とあるが、恋愛は禁止とされていない」と。
翌日、その意見ボードは撤収された。
力がなければ論は意味をなさず、人権も得られない現実を学んだ。
その日から、どの教員に話を通しておけばいいか、所謂「根回し」を学んだ。

文化祭では、それまで禁止されてきた生徒のステージ企画を実現させた。最後に執行部の女子が裁量権を持つ教員を泣き落としてくれたのだ。
「どうすれば力を合わせて物事を成し遂げられるのか」文化祭で学ぶべき事をそこで深く学ばせていただいた。

勘違いしないでほしいが、学校批判をしたいわけではない。これは社会のそこら中に転がっている現実なのだ。あの学校は私にとって、民主主義と現実を学ぶ最高の環境だった。

「先生」と呼ばれる人間には、面従腹背はお手のもの。成し遂げるためには、兎角頭を下げ「勉強になります」と言う。決して逆らわない。すると何らか機会をいただける事もある。話を聴き続けて、実を獲るのだ。これは歳が若いからこそ取れる戦略だ。しかし、ピュアな心と敬意は失ってはいけない。態度でバレる。

もう一つテ��ニックを加えるなら、少し反発した後にその人��りの「正論」を返してくるので、それに納得したように振る舞ってみよう。その内その「先生」は話を聴くようになる。

世間にもよく居るが、話を聴かず自分の価値観だけで物事を判断する人間は、通り過ぎるか「御しやすい」と思えばいい。力で勝つのではなく、構造を読み解き、風を通すのだ。そして、隙が出た時にしっかりと風穴を開けよう。それが相手にとっても、良い学習機会になる。

どれほど民主主義でない学校でも、あなたの手で民主主義を学ぶ最高の環境に変えられる。

もしこの文章を読んで「私の学校でも民主主義を学びたい」と思う人がいたら、私は全力で手助けしたい。全力で支えさせていただく。

教育を、政治を、あなたとともに良くしていきたい。

そして最後に母校の名誉のために加えておきたい。
私は母校が大��きである。
去年、8代目の生徒会からメールが届いたとき、涙が浮かんだ。
これからも、最高の環境をつくってくだ��ることを心より願っている。
