Let Air Zimbabwe be Air Zimbabwe: a profit-making airline, not another stage for politics or the latest national obsession.

Let the investors, whether Spanish or otherwise, decide what success looks like. And which flags to design the planes. Why should the airline concern itself with the opinions of people who will never buy a ticket? If anything, Mutapa should sell down its stake, list the company, raise fresh capital and expand into more source markets.

Air Zimbabwe failed because politicians and the public alike treated it as a flag-waving mascot rather than a commercial enterprise. It isn’t a national trophy. It’s a business.

Ethiopian Airlines didn’t become Africa’s most successful carrier by operating as a social enterprise. It became successful by behaving like a business.
