I believe it was Buckminster Fuller who said you’d never change things by fighting the existing reality and should instead build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete. In my world, the new model is all about stopping the horrendous discrimination of children. Instead of fighting the system, we have built a happy life outside of it, a life anchored in respect for children as individuals. I’m proud to be holding the new and enriched English edition of @Unschooling1 Marta Obiols Llistar’s book, now called “A Successful Education” about self-directed education, education without coercion. Marta’s three kids went on to make fascinating discoveries about themselves and the world, all thanks to her trust in them and their decisions. I humbly hope the chapter I wrote for this book is enriching, too. It’s a snapshot of where we as as a family were two years ago, but even though we have made miles since then (one of my kids has even changed his name after he came out as transgender) it doesn’t get old because it depicts a journey, not a destination.
