@bbcquestiontime Important to note the EU is not a foreign institution. The UK has spent over 45 years as a member. We have helped build & shape it. Its ours as much as anyone elses. That flag is our flag. That anthem is our anthem. They are the symbols of our post war endeavours.
@FionaDiomond This is such a bullshit argument.
If you are still alive you are still benefitting from the public services that exist. They don't stop needing funding just because you got older, not does having paid towards them before mean you should be exempt now.
What people FEEL is that they can't find good jobs, can't afford homes, and that their schools are crumbling and understaffed.
What they are TOLD by the far right and their outriders like Andrew Pierce is that these problems are because of migrants.
I wonder why?
The two-tier policing line started with figures like Tommy Robinson. Was then used by Nigel
Farage. And then is picked up by mainstream journalists and raised with the PM and others. As usual, Farage operating as transmission agent between right-wing extreme and mainstream
@ConHome Really? This?
You think this is the right tone for what's happening right now? Whilst you are in the middle of a leadership bid where most candidates seem happy to take the same anti-immgration stance you've stoked these flames with for the past decade or more?
@Heccles94@BBCNews@SkyNews Inaccurate to call it those things but fair to criticise both sides when wrong doing happens, so long it's put in to context of what happened when & scale
Eg criticising retaliation against the far right mobs is fine so long as it's clear about relative scale & being retaliatory
The Great Replacement Theory can be seen in almost every message you see supporting the riots, either implicitly or explicitly. By far the most poisonous and influential conspiracy theory today.
Kenyan runner Abel Mutai was just a few feet from the finish line, but became confused with the signage and stopped, thinking he had completed the race.
A Spanish runner, Ivan Fernandez, was right behind him and, realizing what was happening, started shouting at the Kenyan to continue running. Mutai didn't know Spanish and didn't understand. Realizing what was taking place, Fernandez pushed Mutai to victory.
A journalist asked Ivan, "Why did you do that?"
Ivan replied, "My dream is that someday we can have a kind of community life where we push and help each other to win."
The journalist insisted, "But why did you let the Kenyan win?"
Ivan replied, "I didn't let him win, he was going to win. The race was his."
The journalist insisted again, "But you could have won!"
Ivan looked at him and replied, "But what would be the merit of my victory? What would be the honor in that medal? What would my mother think of that?"
Your comments on this
@stand_for_all It's an argument used more by the well off, who more expose their own biased views of the less well off, than they do convey any actual truth.
They really need calling out on why they believe it is "working classes" who are most likely to engage in such behaviour.
@JamesCleverly@Jeremy_Hunt Remind me again who was in charge over the last few years whilst the bank had to tackle continuous price rises? https://t.co/BZY26bGjA2.
What we are seeing out there is a conspiracy nexus, created by anonymous accounts, spread by prominent figures on the populist right, seized on by street fascists, and given credibility by politicians, broadcasters and academics https://t.co/LZxRW2cfhp
These are the lads from Kingswood Homes and Southport Mosque who’ve spent the afternoon working together to rebuild the wall. An amazing effort! @MENnewsdesk
🧵1/ Thread on the #Southport anti-migrant and anti-Muslim disinformation and propaganda. In this thread I highlight key spreaders of disinformation, the chronology, and some points about some of the inauthentic activity evident. I will focus on X.
@implausibleblog@lunaperla And it's so important for them to be reminded of this; after witnessing what they did it's so easy to focus on the horror of it.
