This is a little history about campus life on the USC campus. In 1880 the first telephone was installed in the city of Columbia. The first phone installed on the USC campus was in 1884 in the president's office, it was removed in 1894. In 1902 there was one telephone on the campus which was located in an office in Legare. Prior to 1898 students would have to get water from two wells, 1 was located in front on DeSaussuer and 1 in front of Harper. The two wells were vaulted over by order of university president Frank Woodward. From that point students had to get water from hydrants that were connected to the city water system. To take a bath students had to carry water up to their room or they could go to the gymnasium (now Longstreet Theater) where 6 showers were installed in 1896. The University of South Carolina dorms and professor's homes were wired for electricity in 1902. This eliminated the use of kerosene lamps but with the addition of the electricity each student had to pay of a fee of $8 each school year. In the same year of 1902 President Woodward asked the board of trustees to address the lack of a sewage system and to remove the unsightly outhouses. Some sanitary closets were added but because of lack of funding not enough for each dorm room. A sanitary closet was a bathroom the size of a closet. In 1908 DeSaussure had no sanitary closets. When an inspector with the state board of health the inspector reported that more sanitary closets were needed in each dorm room along with more drinking fountains. The dorm rooms were heated by fireplaces but to use them each student had to purchase their own wood or coal.
