At Cornell, the officers who take those reports are sworn law-enforcement officers, not unarmed campus security.

They are appointed as special deputy sheriffs in Tompkins County, take a constitutional oath, carry firearms, and have the same arrest powers as municipal police.

They have the authority and duty to receive crime reports, conduct criminal investigations, arrest violators, and enforce local, state, and federal law on university property.

They are the police.

I think these guys are gross, unethical creeps who deserve shame and judgement from their families and communities, but I also don't believe what happened constitutes "rape."

There needs to be some understanding of and differentiation between "bad behaviour that should be judged and condemned" and "criminal behaviour."

I don't believe the alleged Cornell rape victim. I believe she is unequivocally lying. It took three weeks to even go to the police. After a thorough investigation, the DA refused to prosecute. Now her story is completely different in civil court.

This is based on a coherent reading of the 2024 record as the DA described it.

If her sworn statement to CUPD said the drug use and sex were voluntary, conscious, and consensual, then the professionals who had that file were not required to treat it as a gang rape. Drunk college sex, drugs at a frat house, a bad night, later shame; that pattern exists. It does not need a conspiracy to explain a no-charge decision.

I choose to believe that CUPD and the DA acted on the statement they actually had.
The later lawsuit is a simply regret and embarrassment, which explains the gap better than conspiracy and a buried crime.
