@HeyMrsJay @GeeDee215 As if they don't break their necks for charcoal chemical peels, the latest Lululemon or whatever Issa Rae or Jada Pinkett Smith are on right now. The level of pretentiousness is nauseating.
@alexandramyrick@1a@nhannahjones It was such a good discussion!!! I loved the retort on Newt's "thousands of white men fought to end slavery" and setting the record straight on Abe Lincoln's priorities, only saving the Union!
@Wesley_Morris I so loved your words on @1a re: Black music/culture being loved but not Black ppl. That's my sticking point with #JustinTimberlake...unabashed use of Black musical elements (& Janet's star pwr!) but deafening silence on issues affecting black ppl. He's 1 of many
@nhannahjones@CBSThisMorning Plus....if one is enslaved, the logical flows that someone enabled it!! This was an important distinction for me and shifted my understanding of my ancestors and myself. Being a "slave" wasn't our default identity though was a condition we faced. Reclaiming or harnessing
@phxisstrategic @greytfriend@nhannahjones@tonydokoupil I had to sign up to be notified. I think the demand has been unprecedented, so maybe they didn't set up the notification mechanisms for subscribers.
@GeeDee215 But I do remember that the discussion of the cause of the Civil War was more states' rights than slavery. I think it was the Lincoln movie with Daniel Day Lewis that corrected that lie for me.
@GeeDee215 I don't remember learning the specific date but did learn about slavery. I distinctly recall reading about the "triangular" trade route of the slave trade. I came up in L.A. public schools in the 90s.....and my 1st/2nd/5th grade teachers were black. Don't know if that's why.
@eveewing@nhannahjones Right? Our friendly neighborhood tshirt brothas are the true documentarians! This'll be right along with the bedazzled Michelle Obama shirts on Crenshaw and Slauson in my L.A. 'hood!
@phxisstrategic @greytfriend@nhannahjones@tonydokoupil You can also just go online! As soon as I got the email notification that more were in print, I nabbed mine!
@nhannahjones@CBSThisMorning /wielding definitional power that was/is taken from Black people has been critical in efforts to challenge our dehumanization
@nhannahjones@CBSThisMorning And that a mainstream news anchor used "enslaved Africans" is incredible! I first learned of the important differentiation in college. Slave--default status or inherent definition, 'historyless' while unchangeable or enslaved connotes an action & existence of an identity.
