No, we do not. What makes Japan so admirable is that it is a successful and prosperous non-Western nation with its own unique identity and culture.

That is exceedingly rare. There are only a handful of non-Western nations that we would say deserve the title of belonging to the First World, and Japan is one of them.

But Americanizing Japan would mean that Japan would no longer be Japan. Japan shouldn’t try to be a cheap copy of America when it can instead be a brilliant version of itself.

This is why so many on the “Far Right” actually admire Japan in the first place. It’s a nation that accepted much of the technological advancements of modernity and was even militarily defeated by modernity, but it didn’t succumb to modernity itself. It has retained its older traditions to this day.

We in the West can never become Japanese or know fully what it’s like to live in Japan as a Japanese person, but we can look at Japan from afar and admire the steps this nation has taken to preserve its unique place in the world through decades of extreme economic and military disaster.

That is admirable. And you can still have cross-cultural exchanges without subsuming one civilization into the other. Nothing stops us from enjoying Japanese sushi or anime without abandoning Western civilization, and nothing stops Japan from having McDonald's or going on American-made social media platforms like X without having to abandon their own.
